Modern Fethiye is located on the site of the ancient city of Telmessos. An important Lycian city, which history dates back to the 5th century BC. The ancient Lycian tombs, the Roman theater, and the medieval castle surrounding the city are the only surviving monuments from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The Tombs of Amyntas shown in this video were built in 350 BC. Unlike other tombs carved into the rock, these masterpieces of stone art are distinguished by their large internal sizes.

Today Fethiye is a very popular resort city in southwestern Turkey. The city is especially loved by British people, many of whom come to Fethiye to take a break from the urban bustle of megacities and plunge into ancient history. Due to this increased attention, Fethiye was chosen as the best tourist destination in the world in 2007 by The Times and The Guardian newspapers.
